Francois Beaurain

decommissioned

Monrovia, Liberia, 2013

"decommissioned" is a series of sculptures exclusively made out of neutralised AK47 from the Liberian civil war.

By cutting the AK47 into scrap, United Nations’ weapons destruction programmes have already gone one step into the pacification of these deadly weapons. By the turning the scrap into sculpture, Francois is going one step further and concludes the pacification of the weapons. Because he gives the AK47 a new shape and he also gives them a new meaning far from their initial purpose.

This work is done with the help of Manfred Zbrzezny from Fyrkuna (www.fyrkuna.com).
